Livonia

Livonia was a historic region on the eastern Baltic, centered on present-day Latvia and Estonia. Its territories were contested by Sweden, Poland-Lithuania, and Russia.

Livonian Crusade: A series of medieval campaigns that brought much of present-day Latvia and Estonia under German and Danish Christian rule. Its conquests established the political and religious order later known as Livonia.
Livonian War: A conflict fought from 1558 to 1583 over control of Livonia, involving Russia, Sweden, Poland-Lithuania, and Denmark. The war ended the Livonian Confederation and divided its territories among neighboring powers.
Wolter von Plettenberg: A German knight who served as Livonian master of the Teutonic Order from 1494 to 1535. He strengthened the order’s authority in Livonia before the Reformation and the Livonian War.
Governorate of Livonia: An administrative province of the Russian Empire, established in 1721 in territory formerly ruled by Sweden. It carried the name Livonia into Russian imperial administration.
Livonian Brothers of the Sword: A German military order founded in 1202 to conquer and govern territories in the eastern Baltic. The order led early campaigns that formed the southern core of Livonia.
Treaty of Vilnius (1561): An agreement in 1561 that ended the Livonian Order’s rule and placed much of its territory under Polish-Lithuanian authority. It formalized a major stage in Livonia’s partition during the war.
Ivan the Terrible: The first Russian ruler crowned tsar, whose reign lasted from 1547 to 1584. His invasion of Livonia in 1558 began the war that shattered the confederation.
Baltic Germans: A German-speaking population historically concentrated in the eastern Baltic provinces of the Russian Empire. Baltic German elites retained influence in Livonia under successive rulers.
Teutonic Order: A Catholic military order that ruled territories in Prussia and the eastern Baltic during the Middle Ages. It absorbed the Livonian Brothers of the Sword and became a major power in Livonia.
Duchy of Livonia: A Polish-Lithuanian duchy established in former Livonian territories in the sixteenth century. It preserved the name Livonia under Polish-Lithuanian rule after the medieval order collapsed.
