Livonian Brothers of the Sword

A Catholic military order founded in Livonia in 1202 to conquer and convert peoples around the eastern Baltic. It was absorbed into the Teutonic Order in 1237.

Northern Crusades: A series of medieval campaigns to conquer and Christianize pagan peoples around the Baltic Sea. The order was a principal military force in these campaigns.

Danish Estonia: The medieval Danish possessions in northern Estonia, established through conquest and formalized in the thirteenth century. Danish rule offered a competing crusading power in the region.
Castle of Riga: A medieval fortress in Riga that served as a residence and power center for the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order. Riga became a major base for the order’s operations.
Papal bull: A formal document issued by a pope and authenticated with a lead seal. Papal authorization framed the order’s religious and military mission.
