Livonian Order

A Catholic military order that governed much of medieval Livonia as a branch of the Teutonic Order from 1237 until its dissolution in 1561.

Master of the Livonian Order: The highest-ranking official who governed the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order. The master directed the order’s military and political affairs in Livonia.
Livonian Brothers of the Sword: A Catholic military order founded in 1202 to conquer and convert peoples in the eastern Baltic region. The Livonian Order inherited its territory and institutions after the Brothers’ defeat.
Wolter von Plettenberg: A German knight who served as master of the Livonian Order from 1494 to 1535. His rule marked the order’s strongest resistance to Russian expansion.
Livonian War: A conflict fought from 1558 to 1583 over control of Livonia, involving Russia, Poland-Lithuania, Sweden, and Denmark. The war destroyed the political order in which the Livonian Order had governed.
Livonian Order castles: Fortified residences and strongholds built or occupied by the Livonian Order. Castles secured territory and served as administrative centers for the order.
Teutonic Order: A Catholic military order founded during the Crusades that governed territories around the Baltic Sea. The Livonian Order became a branch of this larger order in 1237.
Andreas von Stucki: The last master of the Livonian Order, serving from 1559 until its dissolution in 1561. His tenure ended with the order’s collapse amid the Livonian War.
