Llywelyn ap Gruffudd

Llywelyn ap Gruffudd was the ruler of Gwynedd and Prince of Wales from 1258 until his death in 1282. He led the last major campaign for an independent Welsh principality before Edward I’s conquest.

Gwynedd: A medieval Welsh kingdom and principality centered in north-west Wales. Its rulers and territories formed the power base from which Llywelyn built his authority.
Treaty of Montgomery: A 1267 agreement in which Henry III recognized Llywelyn as Prince of Wales in return for homage and payment. It marked the high point of Llywelyn’s recognized authority over other Welsh rulers.
Edward I of England: King of England from 1272 to 1307, whose conquest brought Wales under English rule. His campaigns and settlement dismantled the political independence Llywelyn defended.
Battle of Orewin Bridge: The 1282 battle in which English forces killed Llywelyn ap Gruffudd near Builth Wells. His death at this battle ended his personal leadership of Welsh resistance.
Gruffudd ap Llywelyn Fawr: A Welsh prince and son of Llywelyn the Great who contested control of Gwynedd with his half-brother Dafydd. His imprisonment and death helped trigger the succession struggle that brought Llywelyn to power.
Treaty of Aberconwy: A 1277 treaty that required Llywelyn to surrender much of his territory and submit to Edward I. Its terms sharply reduced the principality Llywelyn had consolidated.
Eleanor de Montfort: An English noblewoman who married Llywelyn ap Gruffudd in 1278. Their marriage joined Llywelyn’s rule to the powerful Montfort family and followed years of political obstruction.
Welsh revolt of 1282: A major Welsh uprising against Edward I that began with Dafydd ap Gruffudd’s attack on English-held positions. Llywelyn joined this revolt, which became the final war of his reign.
Dafydd ap Llywelyn: Prince of Gwynedd from 1240 to 1246 and son of Llywelyn the Great. His death without a legitimate heir opened the way for Llywelyn and his brothers to contest Gwynedd.
Welsh law: The customary legal traditions practiced in medieval Wales, distinct in several respects from English law. Disputes over jurisdiction and inheritance became part of the conflict with Edward I.
