Lobengula

Lobengula was the second and last king of the Ndebele Kingdom, ruling from 1868 until British conquest in the 1890s.

Mzilikazi: Mzilikazi founded the Ndebele Kingdom after breaking with Shaka’s Zulu kingdom. Lobengula succeeded his father as king in 1868.
Royal Kraal: Lobengula’s royal settlement and political center, known as Bulawayo. The court was the center of his administration and diplomacy.
Rudd Concession controversy: The dispute over whether Lobengula had knowingly granted extensive mining rights in 1888. The controversy exposed conflicting interpretations of his agreement.
Southern Rhodesia: The British colony established in territory that later became Zimbabwe. Its colonial foundations followed the conquest of Lobengula’s kingdom.
Ndebele Kingdom: A southern African kingdom founded by Mzilikazi and ruled by the Ndebele people. It was the state Lobengula inherited and governed.
Rudd Concession: A 1888 agreement that granted Cecil Rhodes’s associates extensive mineral rights in Lobengula’s territory. Its disputed terms helped open the way to British occupation.
First Matabele War: The 1893–1894 conflict in which the British South Africa Company conquered the Ndebele Kingdom. It ended Lobengula’s rule and dismantled his kingdom.
Jameson Raid: An 1895–1896 armed incursion from the British South Africa Company’s territories into the South African Republic. Company expansion after Lobengula’s defeat helped enable this later crisis.
Ndebele succession dispute: A struggle over the Ndebele throne after Mzilikazi’s death in 1868. Lobengula emerged as king from this contest.
Moffat Treaty: An 1888 treaty in which Lobengula agreed not to make treaties with foreign powers without British approval. It strengthened Britain’s claim to supervise his external relations.
