Local Government Act 1972

The Local Government Act 1972 reorganized local government in England and Wales, replacing many historic councils and taking effect on 1 April 1974.

Administrative counties of England: County-level local government areas in England created or reconfigured under the 1972 Act. The Act established the county framework that replaced many earlier administrative counties.
Local Government Boundary Commission for England: A statutory body that reviews local government boundaries and recommends changes in England. Boundary reform debates preceding the Act involved proposals for a continuing review body.
1974 local government reorganisation in England: The implementation of the 1972 Act’s new local government structure in England on 1 April 1974. This reorganisation put the Act’s English council and boundary provisions into operation.
