Hong Kong Handover : The 1997 transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China. The handover established the political framework against which localist demands for autonomy developed.
Hong Kong Basic Law : Hong Kong’s constitutional document, adopted by China in 1990 and effective from the 1997 handover. It defines the region’s autonomy and the institutions localists seek to defend or change.
Hong Kong integrationism : A political position favoring closer social, economic, and political integration between Hong Kong and mainland China. It prioritizes cross-border integration where localists emphasize distinct interests and identity.
Hong Kong 2019–2020 protests : A mass protest movement triggered by a proposed extradition bill and expanded by demands for political accountability. The protests drew on localist symbols and concerns while encompassing a much broader coalition.
