Localization of brain function

Localization of brain function is the study of how particular brain regions contribute to specific mental and bodily functions. It includes both specialized regional roles and the networks that coordinate them.

Functional specialization: The principle that different brain regions make distinct contributions to behavior and cognition. It captures the central claim that some functions depend especially on particular regions.
Broca's area: A region in the left inferior frontal lobe associated with speech production and language processing. Lesions there helped connect impaired speech production with a localized cortical region.
Phrenology: A discredited nineteenth-century theory that mental faculties could be inferred from skull shape. It popularized the idea of localized faculties while relying on invalid evidence.
Lesion method: An approach that infers brain function by relating damage to changes in behavior or cognition. Lesion evidence tests whether a region is necessary for a particular ability.
Holism in neuroscience: The view that brain functions depend on broad, integrated activity rather than sharply bounded regions. It emphasizes whole-system contributions that strict localization can overlook.
Neural network: A set of interconnected neurons or brain regions whose coordinated activity supports information processing. Localized functions often depend on communication across distributed brain circuits.
Wernicke's area: A traditionally defined region in the left temporal lobe associated with language comprehension. Language-comprehension deficits following injury supported a distinct regional contribution.
Aggregate field theory: The view that complex mental functions arise from the activity of the brain as a whole. It opposed strict localization in debates over how cortical injury disrupts behavior.
Functional magnetic resonance imaging: An imaging method that estimates brain activity through changes in blood oxygenation. It maps activity associated with tasks, while not proving that active regions are necessary.
Neuroplasticity: The nervous system's capacity to change its structure or function with experience, injury, or development. Plasticity shows that functional assignments can shift rather than remain fixed.
