Loch Ness

A large, deep freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands, connected to the sea by the Caledonian Canal. Its long, narrow basin formed in a glacially deepened fault valley.

Great Glen: A long geological valley crossing the Scottish Highlands from Inverness to Fort William. Loch Ness occupies the central section of this major Highland valley.

Loch Ness Centre: A visitor attraction in Drumnadrochit presenting the history and investigation of the Loch Ness Monster legend. The centre interprets the loch’s most famous cultural association.
The Surgeon's Photograph: A 1934 photograph that appeared to show a long-necked creature in Loch Ness and was later exposed as a hoax. Its publication transformed the monster story into an international sensation.
Loch Ness Fault: A major geological fault running along the Great Glen in Scotland. Movement along this fault helped shape the valley containing Loch Ness.
River Ness: A short river flowing from Loch Ness through Inverness into the Moray Firth. It carries water from the loch toward the North Sea.
