Locomotion

Locomotion is the movement of an organism from one place to another. It differs from movement of body parts or growth that does not change the organism’s location.

Walking: Walking is locomotion in which limbs support and propel an organism through repeated steps. Alternating limb support and propulsion make walking a common terrestrial strategy.
Muscle contraction: Muscle contraction is the generation of tension by muscle tissue, often through interactions between actin and myosin. Many animals use contracting muscles to produce the forces that move limbs or bodies.
Animal migration: Animal migration is the regular, often seasonal movement of animals between regions. Locomotion enables long-distance movement between breeding and feeding grounds.
Motility: Motility is the capacity of an organism or cell to move under its own power. Motility describes self-powered movement, while locomotion emphasizes changing place.
Swimming: Swimming is movement through a fluid by producing thrust with body parts or external appendages. Water resistance and buoyancy shape how swimming organisms generate thrust.
Skeletal system: The skeletal system is the body's framework of bones, cartilage, or other supporting structures. Skeletons provide attachment points and leverage for locomotor muscles.
Foraging: Foraging is the search for and acquisition of food by an organism. Movement can expand access to food, though travel itself consumes energy.
Taxis: Taxis is directed movement toward or away from a stimulus. Taxis describes movement's direction relative to a stimulus, not its mechanics.
Flight: Flight is movement through air or another fluid without continuous ground support. Wings and aerodynamic forces let some organisms travel without ground contact.
Biomechanics: Biomechanics applies mechanical principles to the structure and movement of living organisms. It connects anatomy and physical forces to the resulting movement.
