Logical atomism

Logical atomism is the doctrine that reality consists of independent atomic facts and that meaningful propositions analyze into propositions corresponding to those facts.

Atomic fact: A simple fact consisting of objects standing in a relation or possessing a property. Atomic facts are the basic units into which logical atomism analyzes reality.
Picture theory of language: The view that propositions represent possible situations by sharing their logical structure. It explains how propositions can represent atomic facts in the world.
Bertrand Russell: A British philosopher and logician whose work shaped modern analytic philosophy and mathematical logic. Russell introduced logical atomism as a philosophical program in the early twentieth century.
Logical holism: The view that a statement’s meaning or truth depends on its place within a larger system of beliefs or propositions. Holism rejects the atomist idea that propositions can be understood independently at the most basic level.
Analytic philosophy: A philosophical tradition emphasizing clarity, argument, and the analysis of concepts and language. Logical atomism helped establish analysis and formal logic as central philosophical methods.
Logical name: An expression that directly stands for an individual object in a proposition. In the doctrine’s early form, names connect elementary propositions with objects.
Truth table: A tabular method for displaying a compound proposition’s truth value under every assignment of truth values to its parts. Truth tables show how complex propositions depend on elementary ones.
Ludwig Wittgenstein: An Austrian-British philosopher whose early work developed a logical picture theory of language. The Tractatus gives logical atomism its most systematic early presentation.
Semantic holism: The view that an expression’s meaning depends on its relations to other expressions in a language. It opposes the idea that simple names can ground meaning through direct links to objects.
Logical positivism: A twentieth-century movement that tied meaningful factual discourse to empirical verification and logical analysis. Logical positivists inherited the atomist ambition to clarify knowledge through logical structure.
