Logical empiricism

A philosophical movement that sought to connect meaningful knowledge with logic and empirical evidence, emphasizing scientific language, analysis, and the testing of claims.

Verification principle: A criterion linking a statement’s cognitive meaning to the possibility of verifying it through experience or logic. Early logical empiricists used verification to distinguish meaningful claims from metaphysics.
Vienna Circle: A group of philosophers and scientists in interwar Vienna who developed and promoted logical empiricism. The Circle was the movement’s best-known center and organized its early program.
Moritz Schlick: A German philosopher of science who led the Vienna Circle during its formative years. Schlick’s seminar became the Circle’s main meeting place and shaped its discussions.
Quinean holism: The view that statements face experience as an interconnected body rather than being tested one by one. Quine challenged the movement’s sharp separation of analytic truths from empirical claims.
