Knowra Long COVID Long COVID Long COVID is a condition involving persistent, new, or recurring symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection that last for weeks or months and are not explained by another diagnosis.
Viral persistence : The continued presence of a virus or its components in the body after acute infection. Persistent SARS-CoV-2 or viral material is one proposed source of ongoing inflammation and symptoms.
Post-acute infection syndrome : A group of health problems that persist or emerge after an acute infection has ended. Long COVID is one example of illness continuing beyond an acute infectious phase.
COVID-19 pandemic : The global outbreak of disease caused by SARS-CoV-2, declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization in 2020. Long COVID emerged as people reported illness persisting after the acute pandemic infection.
Acute COVID-19 : The initial illness caused by SARS-CoV-2, ranging from asymptomatic infection to severe disease. Long COVID concerns symptoms that persist, recur, or arise beyond the acute illness.
Immune dysregulation : An abnormal or poorly controlled immune response that can damage tissues or disrupt normal immune functions. Altered immune activity may help explain symptoms that continue after the initial infection.
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome : A chronic disorder in which standing causes an excessive rise in heart rate and symptoms of orthostatic intolerance. POTS is diagnosed in a subset of people with Long COVID and can guide symptom management.
Patient-led research : Research initiated or conducted by people directly affected by a health condition. People with persistent symptoms organized early surveys and helped establish Long COVID as a research topic.
Post-intensive care syndrome : New or worsened impairments in physical, cognitive, or mental health after critical illness and intensive care. It can resemble Long COVID, but follows critical illness and intensive care rather than infection alone.
Endothelial dysfunction : Impaired function of the cells lining blood vessels, affecting vascular tone, clotting, and barrier activity. Vascular changes are investigated as a possible contributor to circulation and organ symptoms.
Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome : A chronic multisystem disease marked by substantial activity-related impairment, unrefreshing sleep, and post-exertional malaise. Its symptom overlap and exertion-related worsening inform assessment and care for some patients.
