Lop Nur

Lop Nur is a shifting salt lake basin in the eastern Tarim Basin of Xinjiang, China. It was the Tarim River’s former terminal lake, near the ancient settlement of Loulan.

Tarim River: A major river of Xinjiang, China, whose shifting channels drain the Tarim Basin. Its changing course and discharge shaped the water reaching Lop Nur.
Tarim Basin: A large arid basin in Xinjiang, enclosed by the Tian Shan, Pamir, and Kunlun mountain systems. Lop Nur occupies the basin’s eastern lowlands.
Lop Nur nuclear test site: China’s former nuclear testing area in the Lop Nur region, used for atmospheric and underground tests. The isolated basin was selected for China’s nuclear weapons testing program.
Desertification: The degradation of dryland ecosystems through climate variation and human activity. Loss of lake water intensified the region’s already severe desert conditions.
Terminal lake: A lake with no surface outlet, where water leaves chiefly through evaporation or seepage. Lop Nur collected river water at the basin’s end without an outlet to the sea.
Loulan: An ancient settlement and kingdom near Lop Nur, known from archaeological remains and historical records. Its prosperity and decline were closely tied to water and routes near the lake.
Chinese nuclear tests: Nuclear weapon tests conducted by the People’s Republic of China from 1964 to 1996. Many tests took place at the Lop Nur test site.
Lop Nur wild camel: A population of wild Bactrian camels that inhabits the deserts around Lop Nur. Its habitat includes the remote drylands surrounding the former lake.
Evaporation: The change of liquid water into vapor, driven by heat and energy exchange. Extreme evaporation concentrated salts and helped dry the lake basin.
Silk Road: A network of overland routes that connected China with Central Asia and regions farther west. Routes near Lop Nur linked Loulan with long-distance trade across the Tarim Basin.
