Lord Edward's Crusade

An English-led expedition to the Holy Land in 1271–1272, commanded by Prince Edward, later Edward I, during the final phase of the Crusades.

Edward I of England: King of England from 1272 to 1307, who led an expedition to the Holy Land as Prince Edward. His command and later kingship define the expedition’s leadership and its place in English history.
Fall of Antioch: The Mamluk capture and sack of Antioch in 1268, ending the Principality of Antioch as a major power. The disaster intensified calls for a new western expedition to the Levant.
Fall of Acre: The Mamluk capture of Acre in 1291, which ended the principal crusader presence on the mainland Levant. The city Edward used as a base fell less than two decades after his departure.
Eleanor of Castile: Queen of England and wife of Edward I, who accompanied him on his 1270–1274 crusading journey. Her presence links the expedition to Edward’s household and royal court.
Mamluk Sultanate: A Muslim sultanate centered in Egypt and Syria that ruled from 1250 to 1517. Its armies and regional power constrained Edward’s military options in the Levant.
Crusade of 1270: The campaign led by Louis IX of France that ended in Tunis in 1270, without reaching the Holy Land. Its failure left Edward’s expedition as the next major western effort.
Ninth Crusade: A name sometimes given to the 1271–1272 expedition led by Prince Edward, though its numbering varies among historians. This label places Edward’s campaign within later schemes for counting the Crusades.
Hugh III of Cyprus: King of Cyprus and claimant to the Kingdom of Jerusalem during the late thirteenth century. His contested authority complicated the politics of the crusader territories Edward came to aid.
Baybars: Mamluk sultan from 1260 to 1277 who expanded Mamluk power across the eastern Mediterranean. His campaigns formed the military pressure Edward’s expedition confronted.
Second Council of Lyon: A church council held in 1274 that addressed church reform and plans for a new crusade. Its later crusade planning reflected the continuing concern Edward’s expedition had not resolved.
