Lorentz–Lorenz equation

The Lorentz–Lorenz equation relates a material’s refractive index and density to the polarizability of its molecules, accounting for their collective response to an electric field.

Clausius–Mossotti relation: An equation relating a dielectric’s permittivity to the polarizability and number density of its constituent molecules. It expresses the same local-field correction using dielectric permittivity rather than refractive index.
Electric susceptibility: A measure of how strongly a material becomes polarized in response to an electric field. It provides the bulk polarization quantity connected to molecular response.
Refractometry: The measurement of a substance’s refractive index, commonly used to characterize liquids and solutions. Measured refractive index can be converted to molar refractivity when composition and density are known.
Gladstone–Dale relation: An empirical relation that makes refractivity proportional to material density or concentration. Unlike the Lorentz–Lorenz equation, it uses a simpler linear form and omits its nonlinear index factor.
Lorentz local field: The effective electric field acting on a molecule inside a polarized material, distinct from the material’s average field. The local-field approximation supplies the correction that links molecular and bulk responses.
Dielectric constant: A commonly used name for relative permittivity, the ratio of a material’s permittivity to vacuum permittivity. It is the dielectric property paired with refractive index in equivalent formulations.
Molar refraction: A measure derived from refractive index and molar volume that is related to a substance’s molecular polarizability. It is a practical bulk quantity obtained by rearranging the Lorentz–Lorenz equation.
Maxwell relation for refractive index: The relation stating that refractive index equals the square root of relative permittivity for a nonmagnetic medium. It connects two bulk properties but does not explicitly relate either to molecular polarizability.
Molecular polarizability: A measure of how readily a molecule’s electric charge distribution is distorted by an electric field. This molecular response is the microscopic quantity the equation relates to refractive index.
Molar refractivity: A molar quantity derived from refractive index and molar volume that reflects molecular polarizability. It packages the equation’s refractive-index and density terms into a quantity useful for comparing substances.
