Lorraine Hansberry

Lorraine Hansberry (1930–1965) was an American playwright and writer whose A Raisin in the Sun became the first play by a Black woman produced on Broadway.

A Raisin in the Sun: A 1959 play about a Black family confronting segregation, money, and competing dreams in Chicago. Hansberry’s best-known play brought her account of housing discrimination to Broadway.
Chicago: The largest city in Illinois, located on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan. Hansberry grew up in Chicago, whose neighborhoods informed A Raisin in the Sun.
Robert Nemiroff: An American songwriter and producer who was Hansberry’s husband and later steward of her writings. Nemiroff helped bring several of her unfinished and posthumous works to the stage.
Civil rights movement: A broad U.S. movement that challenged racial segregation and discrimination, especially during the 1950s and 1960s. Hansberry participated in the movement and wrote about its strategies and stakes.
