Louis Agassiz

Louis Agassiz (1807–1873) was a Swiss-American naturalist and geologist known for research on fossil fishes, evidence for ancient glaciation, and opposition to Darwinian evolution.

Alexander von Humboldt: A Prussian naturalist and explorer whose writings shaped nineteenth-century science and natural history. Humboldt’s scientific authority helped establish the intellectual world in which Agassiz trained.
Glacial theory: The explanation that glaciers and continental ice sheets have repeatedly expanded and reshaped Earth’s surface. Agassiz became a leading advocate for this broad explanation of geological change.
