Louis Althusser

Louis Althusser (1918–1990) was a French Marxist philosopher who interpreted Marx through structuralism and analyzed how ideology and state institutions reproduce social relations.

Historical materialism: A theory that explains historical change through material conditions and conflicts between social classes. Althusser recast this Marxist framework as a structured process rather than a simple sequence of economic causes.
Ideological state apparatuses: Institutions such as schools, churches, and media that function primarily through ideology. Althusser argued that these institutions help reproduce capitalist relations by shaping subjects and practices.
Karl Marx: A nineteenth-century philosopher and political economist whose writings founded modern communist theory and influenced socialist movements. Althusser’s philosophical project centered on interpreting Marx’s writings and the scientific status of historical materialism.
