Louis XI

King of France from 1461 to 1483, Louis XI expanded the crown’s territory and strengthened royal authority through diplomacy, administration, and conflict with powerful nobles.

Treaty of Arras (1482): A 1482 agreement between France and the Habsburgs that settled claims to Burgundian lands after Charles the Bold’s death. It secured French control of parts of the Burgundian inheritance through negotiation.
War of the Public Weal: A 1465 revolt by French nobles against Louis XI, led by Charles the Bold and other major princes. The uprising forced Louis to confront a coalition of aristocratic opponents.
Charles VII of France: King of France from 1422 to 1461 and father of Louis XI. Their strained relationship set the stage for Louis’s early opposition to royal policy.
