Louis XII of France

Louis XII was king of France from 1498 to 1515. He pursued claims to Milan and Naples in the Italian Wars and supported Cesare Borgia’s rise.

Italian Wars: A series of conflicts in Italy from 1494 to 1559 involving France, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire, and Italian states. Louis’s campaigns for Milan and Naples opened the French phase of these wars.
Cesare Borgia: An Italian military leader and ruler who sought to build a principality in central Italy. Louis’s support helped Cesare obtain French backing and pursue power in the Romagna.
Charles VIII of France: King of France from 1483 to 1498 who invaded Italy to claim the Kingdom of Naples. Louis succeeded Charles and inherited the consequences of his Italian expedition.
Battle of Agnadello: A 1509 French victory over Venice during the War of the League of Cambrai. Louis’s forces broke Venetian resistance but did not secure lasting French dominance in Italy.
Julius II: Pope from 1503 to 1513 who sought to expand papal territory and resist French power in Italy. His shifting alliances helped form the coalition that expelled Louis’s forces from Milan.
Duchy of Milan: A northern Italian state ruled by the Sforza dynasty and later contested by France and other powers. Louis claimed Milan through his Visconti ancestry and invaded it in 1499.
Anne of Brittany: Duchess of Brittany and queen consort of France, married to Charles VIII and later Louis XII. Her marriage to Louis helped keep Brittany linked to the French crown.
Valois dynasty: A branch of the Capetian dynasty that ruled France from 1328 to 1589. Louis’s accession continued Valois rule after the death of Charles VIII.
League of Cambrai: A 1508 alliance of European powers formed to attack the Republic of Venice. Louis joined the league and led its major victory at Agnadello.
Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor: Holy Roman Emperor from 1508 to 1519 who contested French influence in Italy. His campaigns and alliances challenged Louis’s ambitions in the peninsula.
