Louisiana (New France)

Louisiana was a French colonial territory in the Mississippi basin and Gulf Coast region, claimed and governed by France from the late seventeenth century until its cessions in the eighteenth century.

René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle: A French explorer who traveled down the Mississippi River and claimed its basin for France in 1682. His 1682 claim named the territory Louisiana in honor of Louis XIV.
Company of the Indies: A French chartered company that held a monopoly over colonial trade and administration in Louisiana during the 1710s and 1720s. It governed the colony and sought settlers and profits under royal charter.
Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville: A French colonial administrator who helped establish New Orleans and served several terms as governor of Louisiana. His long governorship shaped the colony’s early administration and settlement.
Treaty of Fontainebleau (1762): A secret agreement in which France ceded Louisiana west of the Mississippi to Spain during the Seven Years’ War. It transferred the western colony to Spain before the transfer became public.
Mississippi River: A major North American river flowing from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico. Its basin supplied the geographic framework for France’s territorial claim.
Natchez Revolt: A 1729 uprising in which Natchez people attacked the French settlement at Fort Rosalie. The revolt exposed the colony’s vulnerability and helped end company rule.
Antoine Crozat: A French financier who received a royal monopoly over Louisiana’s trade from 1712 to 1717. His short-lived monopoly was an early experiment in private control of the colony.
Treaty of Paris (1763): The 1763 treaty that ended the Seven Years’ War and formalized major territorial changes among European empires. It confirmed Britain’s acquisition of former French Louisiana east of the Mississippi.
New France: The French colonial empire in North America, centered on the St. Lawrence River and extending into the interior. Louisiana became the southern reach of France’s broader North American empire.
Fort Rosalie: A French fort and settlement established at Natchez in 1716, on the Mississippi River. Its destruction during the Natchez Revolt was a major blow to French authority.
