Knowra Low Countries Low Countries The Low Countries are a northwestern European region comprising the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg, historically linked by low-lying lands around the Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta.
Seventeen Provinces : A union of Habsburg Netherlands territories brought together under Charles V and inherited by Philip II. This early modern political grouping covered much of the region before the Dutch Revolt divided it.
Rhine–Meuse–Scheldt delta : A network of river mouths, estuaries, and islands where the Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt reach the North Sea. Its low-lying landscape is the geographical core associated with the Low Countries.
Delta Works : A Dutch system of dams, sluices, locks, dikes, and storm-surge barriers built chiefly to reduce flood risk. It is a major engineering response to the region’s exposure to coastal flooding.
Dutch Golden Age : A period of exceptional economic, scientific, and artistic flourishing in the Dutch Republic, mainly during the seventeenth century. It reflects the commercial and cultural influence of the northern Low Countries.
Benelux Union : An intergovernmental union of Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg that supports cooperation among its members. It names an institutional partnership, not the broader historical and geographical region.
Dutch Revolt : A rebellion against Spanish Habsburg rule that began in 1568 and led to the independence of the Dutch Republic. Its outcome separated the northern Netherlands from the southern provinces that later formed Belgium.
North Sea : A shallow sea of the northeastern Atlantic bordered by northwestern continental Europe and Great Britain. Its coastline bounds the region and has shaped settlement, trade, and flood risk.
Zuiderzee Works : A Dutch system of dams and land-reclamation projects that transformed the Zuiderzee into the IJsselmeer. It turned a former inland sea into protected freshwater and new land.
Flemish painting : A tradition of painting in the Low Countries, especially associated with artists in the southern Netherlands from the fifteenth century onward. Its artists made the region a major center of European painting.
Dutch-speaking world : The global community of places where Dutch is spoken, including areas beyond the Netherlands and Belgium. Language-based reach does not match the Low Countries’ geographic boundaries.
