Lower Saxony

Lower Saxony is a state in northwestern Germany, bordering the North Sea and surrounding the city-state of Bremen. Its capital is Hanover.

Hanover: Hanover is the capital and largest city of Lower Saxony. The state government and parliament are based in its capital.
Allied-occupied Germany: Allied-occupied Germany was the territory governed by the Allied powers after Nazi Germany’s defeat in 1945. Lower Saxony was established within the British occupation zone.
Volkswagen: Volkswagen is a German automobile manufacturer headquartered in Wolfsburg, Lower Saxony. Its Wolfsburg headquarters make the state central to the company’s history and production.
North Rhine-Westphalia: North Rhine-Westphalia is Germany’s most populous state, in the country’s west. It borders Lower Saxony and has a more densely urban and industrial population.
Bremen: Bremen is a German city-state consisting of the cities of Bremen and Bremerhaven. Lower Saxony almost entirely surrounds Bremen’s inland territory.
British occupation zone in Germany: The British occupation zone was the postwar German territory administered by the United Kingdom. British authorities combined several territories to form the state.
Wolfsburg: Wolfsburg is a city in Lower Saxony, founded in 1938 as the home of Volkswagen’s factory. The city’s development is closely tied to automobile manufacturing.
Schleswig-Holstein: Schleswig-Holstein is Germany’s northernmost state, between the North Sea and Baltic Sea. Both states have North Sea coasts, but only Schleswig-Holstein borders the Baltic.
North Sea: The North Sea is a marginal sea of the northeastern Atlantic Ocean, bordered by northwestern Europe. Lower Saxony’s coastline and East Frisian Islands face this sea.
Kingdom of Hanover: The Kingdom of Hanover was a state in northwestern Germany from 1814 to 1866. Its former territory became a major part of Lower Saxony.
