Lübeck

Lübeck is a city in northern Germany whose medieval port made it a leading center of the Hanseatic League and Baltic trade.

Slavic Lübeck: A medieval Slavic settlement at the site of present-day Lübeck, known as Liubice. Liubice preceded the German city and gave Lübeck its name.
Hanseatic League: A network of merchant communities and towns that organized trade and defended commercial privileges in northern Europe. Lübeck became the league’s leading city and a central meeting place.
Brick Gothic: A northern European Gothic architectural style that used brick where building stone was scarce. Lübeck’s churches and civic buildings became prominent examples of the style.
