Lucayan Archipelago

The Lucayan Archipelago is an island group in the western Atlantic comprising the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands. Its low-lying islands and banks sit on the submerged Bahama Platform.

Bahamas: An Atlantic country occupying most of the Lucayan Archipelago, made up of hundreds of islands and cays. The Bahamas make up the archipelago’s larger political component.
Carbonate platform: A broad marine structure built from carbonate sediments and organisms, often in warm, shallow water. The archipelago’s banks are parts of this wider geological form.
Lucayan people: An Indigenous Taíno people who inhabited the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands before European colonization. Their presence gave the archipelago its name and preceded European settlement.
Coral reef: A marine ecosystem built by reef-forming corals and other organisms that secrete calcium carbonate. Reefs fringe parts of the archipelago and provide habitat and coastal protection.
Caribbean Islands: An island region surrounding the Caribbean Sea and extending into the adjacent Atlantic Ocean. The Lucayan Archipelago lies north of the Caribbean Sea and is often distinguished from its islands.
Turks and Caicos Islands: A British Overseas Territory in the southeastern Lucayan Archipelago, consisting of two island groups. These islands complete the archipelago’s political geography beyond the Bahamas.
Oolitic limestone: Limestone composed largely of small, rounded carbonate grains called ooids. Ooid-rich deposits form parts of the Bahamian islands and their geological record.
Christopher Columbus: A Genoese navigator whose 1492 voyage for Spain initiated sustained European contact with the Americas. His first recorded landfall in the Americas was on a Lucayan island in 1492.
Andros Barrier Reef: A long barrier reef system off the eastern coast of Andros Island in the Bahamas. It is a prominent example of the archipelago’s extensive reef environments.
Greater Antilles: The large Caribbean islands of Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. These neighboring islands belong to the Caribbean region, not the Lucayan Archipelago.
