Lucius Cornelius Sulla

Lucius Cornelius Sulla was a Roman general and dictator whose civil war and dictatorship reshaped Republican politics. He became Rome’s first dictator to seize power by force and later voluntarily resigned.

First Roman Civil War: The conflict between Sulla’s supporters and those of Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Cinna, fought from 88 to 82 BCE. Sulla marched on Rome in 88 BCE and returned with an army to defeat his opponents.
Social War (91–87 BC): A war between Rome and its Italian allies, who sought Roman citizenship and political rights. Sulla gained military distinction commanding Roman forces during this conflict.
Second Roman Civil War: The conflict of 83–82 BCE between Sulla’s forces and the Marian-Cinnan regime in Italy. Sulla’s return from the East ended the regime that had ruled Rome in his absence.

Proscriptions: Official lists of people condemned as enemies, whose property could be seized and whose lives could be taken with impunity. Sulla used these lists to eliminate enemies and reward supporters after taking Rome.
Gaius Marius: A Roman general and politician who held the consulship seven times and became Sulla’s principal rival. Their struggle for command against Mithridates helped trigger Sulla’s march on Rome.
