Luddite

A participant in early nineteenth-century English protests who attacked machinery used to undermine skilled workers’ wages, working conditions, and control over production.

Frame breaking: The deliberate destruction of machinery, especially textile frames, as protest or industrial sabotage. Luddites made frame breaking a tactic against employers who used machinery to cut wages or evade trade rules.
Ned Ludd: A legendary figure invoked as the supposed leader of the Luddite movement. Luddites used his name in threatening letters and proclamations to project a collective identity.
George Mellor: A Yorkshire croppers’ leader executed for his role in the murder of factory owner William Horsfall. Mellor was one of the best-known figures associated with the West Riding Luddite rising.
Technological determinism: The view that technological development largely drives social and historical change. Luddite protests focused on who controlled machinery and gained from it, not simply on technology’s existence.
Luddite fallacy: The claim that technological change does not permanently reduce total employment because it creates new kinds of work. The term invokes Luddites as a cautionary example, though historians dispute whether their actual claims fit the caricature.
Stocking frame: A hand-operated knitting machine used to produce stockings and other knitted goods. Stocking-frame workers were among the first groups whose livelihoods were threatened by changing production practices.
Luddite letters: Anonymous letters sent by Luddite groups to employers and officials, often threatening action over labor disputes. The letters communicated demands and warned employers before or alongside attacks on machinery.
William Horsfall: A Yorkshire mill owner shot and killed by Luddites in 1812. His killing showed how the conflict could move beyond attacks on machinery to personal violence.
Machine breaking in the Swing Riots: The destruction of threshing machines during rural labor protests in southern England in 1830. The later Swing Riots also attacked machinery, but arose from agricultural labor disputes rather than textile craft conflicts.
Anti-technological sentiment: Skepticism or opposition toward particular technologies and their effects on society. The modern stereotype treats Luddites as opponents of technology itself, a broader position than their historical protests.
