Luftwaffe

The Luftwaffe was Nazi Germany’s air force from 1935 until the end of World War II. It fought across Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Soviet Union.

Messerschmitt Bf 109: A German single-seat fighter aircraft used by the Luftwaffe from the Spanish Civil War through World War II. This principal fighter carried much of the Luftwaffe’s air combat burden.
Treaty of Versailles: The 1919 peace treaty that formally ended the state of war between Germany and the Allied Powers after World War I. Its restrictions barred Germany from maintaining an air force, which the Nazi regime later overturned.
Hermann Göring: A leading Nazi official who served as commander in chief of the Luftwaffe for most of World War II. He built the service into a political power and shaped its strategic decisions.
Condor Legion: A German air unit sent to support Nationalist forces in the Spanish Civil War. Its operations in Spain provided an early test of Luftwaffe personnel and equipment.
Allied strategic bombing campaign: The sustained Allied air offensive against Axis military and industrial targets during World War II. It damaged German production and forced the Luftwaffe to devote growing strength to defense.
Junkers Ju 87: A German dive bomber known as the Stuka, used extensively early in World War II. Its precision attacks supported the close air-ground cooperation central to early German campaigns.
German rearmament: The rebuilding of Germany’s armed forces in violation of post–World War I restrictions. The Luftwaffe was one of the major armed services created through this broader program.
Ernst Udet: A German World War I fighter ace who led Luftwaffe aircraft procurement before his death in 1941. His procurement choices influenced the force’s aircraft development and production.
Battle of Britain: The 1940 air campaign in which Germany sought air superiority over Britain and the Royal Air Force resisted. The Luftwaffe failed to secure the air control needed for a planned invasion.
Combined Bomber Offensive: The Anglo-American bombing campaign against German industry and cities, especially from 1943 to 1945. Its pressure depleted aircraft, fuel, and experienced crews faster than Germany could replace them.
