Luhansk Oblast

Luhansk Oblast is an administrative region in eastern Ukraine, bordering Russia and centered on the city of Luhansk. Its territory has been contested and partly occupied since 2014.

Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic: A constituent republic of the Soviet Union from 1922 until Ukraine became independent in 1991. The oblast’s modern administrative framework was formed within the Ukrainian Soviet republic.
Administrative divisions of Ukraine: The system of regions, districts, and communities through which Ukraine organizes territorial administration. Luhansk Oblast is one of Ukraine’s first-level administrative regions.
Severodonetsk: An industrial city in Luhansk Oblast that became the site of a major 2022 battle. Its capture marked a decisive phase in Russia’s campaign to seize the oblast.
War in Donbas: An armed conflict beginning in 2014 between Ukraine and Russian-backed forces in the Donbas. The conflict began in the oblast and left it divided between opposing authorities.
Donbas: A coal-rich industrial and cultural region spanning parts of eastern Ukraine and southwestern Russia. Luhansk Oblast forms the eastern part of Ukraine’s Donbas region.
Raion: A second-level administrative district used in Ukraine and several other post-Soviet countries. Raions divide the oblast into districts beneath the regional level.
Lysychansk: A city in Luhansk Oblast situated across the Siverskyi Donets River from Severodonetsk. Its capture in 2022 completed Russia’s seizure of nearly all the oblast.
Russian invasion of Ukraine: Russia’s full-scale military invasion of Ukraine, launched in February 2022, following its 2014 aggression. The invasion intensified battles and occupation across Luhansk Oblast.
Donetsk Oblast: An administrative region in eastern Ukraine, west of Luhansk Oblast. The neighboring oblast shares the Donbas’s industrial history and conflict experience.
Hromada: A territorial community that forms a basic unit of local self-government in Ukraine. Hromadas provide local governance within the oblast’s administrative structure.
