Luigi Pirandello

Luigi Pirandello (1867–1936) was an Italian playwright, novelist, and short-story writer. His works probe unstable identity, theatrical illusion, and the conflict between appearance and truth.

Six Characters in Search of an Author: A 1921 play in which unfinished fictional characters interrupt a theater rehearsal and demand that their story be staged. Its collision between actors, characters, and author makes theatrical illusion a central problem.
Mask and Face: A 1917 play about a husband whose attempt to escape a loveless marriage becomes entangled with social respectability. Its title captures the conflict between outward role and private self that recurs in Pirandello.
