Luis Alvarez

Luis Alvarez (1911–1988) was an American experimental physicist who shared the 1968 Nobel Prize in Physics and helped develop the asteroid-impact explanation for the K–Pg extinction.

Walter Alvarez: An American geologist who proposed that an asteroid impact caused the K–Pg mass extinction with his father, Luis Alvarez. Their father–son collaboration joined geological evidence to Luis’s impact hypothesis.
Neutron-activation analysis: An analytical technique that identifies elements by measuring radiation emitted after a sample is irradiated with neutrons. Asaro and Michel used it to quantify iridium in the boundary clay.
Ground-controlled approach: A radar-based air-traffic system that guides pilots along a landing path using instructions from ground controllers. Alvarez helped develop this radar landing system during World War II.
