Luís Cabral

Luís Cabral was a Guinea-Bissauan politician and independence leader who served as the country’s first president from 1973 until his overthrow in 1980.

Amílcar Cabral: A Guinea-Bissauan and Cape Verdean revolutionary who led the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde until his assassination in 1973. Luís Cabral’s half-brother founded the movement that brought him to power.
Guinea-Bissau War of Independence: An armed conflict from 1963 to 1974 in which PAIGC fought Portuguese rule in Guinea-Bissau. The war created the political and military institutions that Cabral inherited.
