Luis Echeverría

Luis Echeverría Álvarez was president of Mexico from 1970 to 1976, after serving as interior secretary. His government expanded social programs while overseeing severe political repression.

Corpus Christi massacre: A 1971 attack in Mexico City in which the paramilitary group Los Halcones killed student demonstrators. The massacre became a defining example of repression during Echeverría’s presidency.
Gustavo Díaz Ordaz: Mexican president from 1964 to 1970, whose government ordered the 1968 Tlatelolco crackdown. Echeverría served as his interior secretary before succeeding him as president.
