Luís Gama

Luís Gama (1830–1882) was a Brazilian lawyer, journalist, poet, and abolitionist who used legal arguments and court actions to free enslaved people.

Free Womb Law: Brazil’s 1871 law declared children born to enslaved women free, while imposing restrictions on their lives. Gama invoked its limits and protections in legal efforts to challenge enslavement.
