Knowra Luminance Luminance Luminance measures light emitted or reflected in a given direction, weighted by the sensitivity of human vision. It is expressed in candelas per square metre.
Luminous intensity : Luminous intensity is luminous flux emitted per unit solid angle in a specified direction, measured in candelas. Luminance describes directional light output per projected area, extending this quantity to visible surfaces.
Photopic vision : Photopic vision is cone-mediated human vision under bright-light conditions. The standard luminance weighting follows the eye’s light-adapted spectral sensitivity.
Display luminance : Display luminance is the light output of a screen per projected area in a specified viewing direction. Screen specifications use luminance to quantify emitted light, commonly in candelas per square metre.
Colorfulness : Colorfulness is the perceived intensity of a color’s chromatic component, apart from its perceived brightness. Luminance tracks visual weighting of light, not the strength of a surface’s chromatic appearance.
Luminous flux : Luminous flux is the total rate of visible light emission, weighted by human visual sensitivity, measured in lumens. It totals visible light across directions, while luminance specifies light in a direction and across an area.
Luminous efficacy function : The luminous efficacy function describes the human eye’s relative sensitivity to different wavelengths under specified viewing conditions. Its wavelength weighting converts radiant measurements into quantities relevant to visual response.
High dynamic range : High dynamic range is the representation or reproduction of images with a wider range of light intensities than standard imaging. HDR systems use luminance ranges to describe and reproduce highlights and dark regions.
Albedo : Albedo is the fraction of incident radiation reflected by a surface, often averaged over directions or wavelengths. Albedo describes reflectance as a proportion, whereas luminance depends on illumination and viewing direction.
Illuminance : Illuminance measures luminous flux arriving at a surface per unit area, expressed in lux. It measures light falling onto a surface; luminance measures light leaving it toward a direction.
Solid angle : A solid angle measures the apparent size of a region of space from a point, in steradians. Luminance is defined per unit solid angle, specifying how much light travels in each direction.
