Lunar libration

Lunar libration is the apparent rocking of the Moon that lets observers see slightly beyond its average visible hemisphere over time.

Optical libration: Apparent lunar rocking caused by changing viewing geometry rather than physical oscillation. It is the apparent component produced by the Moon’s changing position and orientation as seen from Earth.
Lunar cartography: The mapping and measurement of the Moon’s surface and geographic features. Combining observations across librations extends maps beyond the central face.
Synchronous rotation: A state in which a body's rotation period equals its orbital period around another body. The Moon’s near-synchronous rotation keeps one hemisphere facing Earth on average.
Lunar phase: The changing appearance of the Moon’s illuminated portion as seen from Earth. Phases change illumination, whereas libration changes which surface regions face Earth.
Physical libration: Small real oscillations in the Moon’s rotation around its mean orientation. Unlike most visible rocking, this component comes from actual rotational motion.
Far side of the Moon: The lunar hemisphere that faces away from Earth on average. Libration reveals only narrow margins of this hemisphere, not its central regions.
Kepler's laws of planetary motion: Three laws describing how planets orbit, including the relation between orbital speed and distance. The Moon’s variable orbital speed follows the same orbital geometry that drives longitudinal libration.
Tidal locking: A state in which tidal forces have synchronized a body's rotation with its orbit. Tidal locking explains the Moon’s average orientation; libration describes the small departures from it.
Lunar orbit: The Moon’s path around Earth, which is elliptical and inclined relative to Earth’s orbital plane. Its changing speed along an elliptical path produces longitudinal optical libration.
Lunar limb: The apparent edge of the Moon’s disk as seen from an observer’s location. Libration shifts which surface features lie along the visible edge.
