Lunar theory

Lunar theory mathematically describes the Moon’s orbit and changing position under gravitational forces, especially from Earth and the Sun. It accounts for departures from a simple Keplerian ellipse.

Three-body problem: The problem of predicting the motions of three bodies interacting through gravity. Earth, Moon, and Sun form the central gravitational system lunar theory must approximate.
Keplerian orbit: An idealized orbit following Kepler’s laws for two bodies interacting through gravity alone. It supplies the baseline ellipse that lunar theory modifies.
Hipparchus: A Greek astronomer of the second century BCE known for mathematical astronomy and a star catalogue. His treatment of lunar motion incorporated the solar-driven evection inequality.
Lunar distance method: A navigational technique that determines longitude by measuring the Moon’s angular distance from a celestial object. Its tables required reliable predictions of the Moon’s position against the stars.
Numerical integration: The computational approximation of solutions to differential equations by advancing through finite time steps. It computes lunar trajectories directly rather than representing motion chiefly with analytical series.
Perturbation theory: A family of methods that approximates solutions by adding corrections to a simpler solvable model. Lunar calculations treat solar and planetary effects as corrections to idealized orbital motion.
Orbital elements: Parameters that specify the size, shape, orientation, and position of an orbit. Lunar theories express changing orbital geometry through evolving elements.
Ptolemaic system: An ancient geocentric model in which celestial bodies move through combinations of circles around Earth. Ptolemy’s lunar model was a major early geometric account of the Moon’s changing motion.
Eclipse prediction: The calculation of when and where solar or lunar eclipses will occur. Eclipse paths depend on precise lunar positions and orbital geometry.
Analytical mechanics: The mathematical formulation of mechanics using tools such as variational principles and generalized coordinates. It provides the equations and formal methods used to derive analytical lunar theories.
