Lusaka Accord

The 1974 agreement between Portugal and FRELIMO that established a transitional government and set Mozambique on the path to independence.

Mozambican War of Independence: An armed conflict from 1964 to 1974 between Portugal and Mozambican liberation movements seeking independence. The war created the pressure that brought Portugal and FRELIMO to negotiate.
Transitional government: A temporary governing authority established to manage a political transition between systems of rule. The accord provided for a transitional administration before sovereignty transferred.
