Lusotropicalism

Lusotropicalism is a theory associated with Gilberto Freyre that portrays Portuguese colonialism as unusually adaptable and conducive to racial and cultural mixing.

Gilberto Freyre: A Brazilian sociologist and writer whose work emphasized cultural mixing and shaped Lusotropicalism. His account of Brazil supplied the theory’s central claims about Portuguese colonization.
Racial democracy: The contested idea that a society has little or no racial hierarchy or discrimination. Lusotropicalism helped support claims that Brazil’s racial mixing produced racial harmony.
Brazilian national identity: A changing sense of shared belonging shaped by Brazil’s history, culture, and political institutions. Freyre’s account of mixture helped make hybridity central to national self-understanding.
Miscegenation: The interbreeding of people assigned to different racial groups, especially as described in historical racial classifications. Lusotropicalist accounts treat racial mixing as evidence of colonial adaptability, but not necessarily equality.
Casa-Grande & Senzala: Gilberto Freyre’s 1933 study of the Brazilian plantation household and the formation of Brazilian society. This book developed ideas later gathered under the name Lusotropicalism.
