Lut Desert

The Lut Desert is a vast arid region in southeastern Iran, distinguished by extreme surface temperatures, wind-sculpted landforms, and UNESCO World Heritage status.

Gandom Beryan: A dark volcanic plateau in the Lut Desert associated with exceptionally high satellite-measured land-surface temperatures. This plateau became widely known through reports of extreme surface heat in the desert.
Yardang: A streamlined ridge of rock or sediment carved by persistent wind-driven erosion. The Lut’s kaluts are exceptionally extensive examples of yardangs.
Dasht-e Kavir: A large salt desert in north-central Iran, distinct from the Lut Desert in the southeast. Comparing Iran’s two major deserts clarifies their different settings and landscapes.

Desertification: Land degradation in drylands caused by climatic variations and human activities. The Lut is a naturally arid desert, not simply land degraded by desertification.
