Luxor Governorate

An administrative governorate in southern Egypt, centered on Luxor and encompassing major archaeological sites along the Nile.

Karnak: A vast temple complex on the east bank of the Nile at Luxor, dedicated chiefly to Amun. Its precincts are among the governorate’s largest and most prominent archaeological sites.
Nile: A major African river that flows north through Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea. Its valley structures settlement, agriculture, and transport across the governorate.
Thebes (Egypt): An ancient Egyptian city on both banks of the Nile, centered on the site of modern Luxor. The governorate contains the principal remains of this ancient capital.
Tourism in Egypt: The travel industry centered on Egypt’s cultural heritage, natural environments, and resort destinations. Visitors to the governorate form a major part of Egypt’s cultural tourism.
Luxor Temple: An ancient Egyptian temple on the east bank of the Nile in the modern city of Luxor. It stands at the urban heart of the governorate.
East Bank: The Nile’s eastern shore at Luxor, where the modern city and major temples stand. It concentrates the governorate’s urban center and principal monumental precincts.
Ancient Egypt: The civilization of the Nile Valley from its early kingdoms through the Roman conquest. The monuments within the governorate were built across several periods of its history.
World Heritage Site: A place recognized by UNESCO for cultural or natural significance of outstanding universal value. The ancient Thebes and its necropolis are protected through UNESCO’s World Heritage program.
Valley of the Kings: A burial ground on the west bank of the Nile where New Kingdom pharaohs were interred in rock-cut tombs. Its royal tombs make the west bank a major archaeological destination.
West Bank: The Nile’s western shore at Luxor, known for ancient cemeteries and mortuary temples. It contains many of the archaeological sites that draw visitors to the governorate.
