Lyakhovsky Islands

The Lyakhovsky Islands are a group in the Laptev Sea, Russia, forming the southern part of the New Siberian Islands.

New Siberian Islands: An archipelago in the Arctic Ocean between the Laptev and East Siberian seas. The Lyakhovsky Islands form this archipelago’s southern part.
Great Lyakhovsky Island: The largest island of the Lyakhovsky group, in the Laptev Sea. It is the group’s principal island by area.
Permafrost: Ground that remains at or below 0 °C for at least two consecutive years. Much of the islands’ land is underlain by permanently frozen ground.
Pleistocene megafauna: Large animal species that lived during the Pleistocene epoch. Mammoth remains in the region preserve evidence of ancient fauna.
Laptev Sea: A marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean north of Siberia. It borders the Lyakhovsky Islands to the west and south.
Small Lyakhovsky Island: An island in the Lyakhovsky group, northeast of Great Lyakhovsky Island. It is one of the group’s named islands.
Yedoma: Ice-rich, organic-rich permafrost deposits formed during the Pleistocene. Yedoma deposits occur in the region and are vulnerable to thaw.
Woolly mammoth: An extinct elephant species adapted to cold environments across northern Eurasia and North America. Mammoth tusks and bones have been recovered from the islands.
East Siberian Sea: A marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean between the Laptev Sea and the Chukchi Sea. It lies east of the New Siberian Islands.
Stolbovoy Island: An island in the southern part of the New Siberian Islands. It is commonly included among the Lyakhovsky Islands.
