Lystrosaurus Assemblage Zone

A fossil-bearing interval in southern Africa distinguished by abundant remains of the dicynodont Lystrosaurus. It is a biostratigraphic unit used to correlate rocks around the Permian–Triassic boundary.

Lystrosaurus: An extinct genus of herbivorous dicynodont synapsids that lived in the Late Permian and Early Triassic. Its abundant fossils give this assemblage zone its name and diagnostic character.
Karoo Supergroup: A thick sequence of sedimentary rocks deposited across southern Africa from the Carboniferous to the Jurassic. The zone occurs within the Karoo succession and helps organize its fossil-bearing strata.
