M. C. Escher

M. C. Escher was a Dutch graphic artist whose prints transform architectural space and geometric patterns into visual paradoxes. His work combines precise draftsmanship with mathematical ideas, especially symmetry, infinity, and impossible structures.

Lithography: A printing process that transfers an image from a flat surface using the incompatibility of oil and water. Escher used lithography to produce many of his large, detailed compositions.
Impossible object: A two-dimensional depiction that suggests a three-dimensional object whose parts cannot coexist in ordinary space. Escher’s impossible structures make locally plausible forms combine into globally inconsistent objects.
Maurits Cornelis Escher: The full name of the Dutch artist commonly known as M. C. Escher. His initials became the familiar name under which his prints circulated.
H. S. M. Coxeter: A Canadian geometer whose work on polyhedra and hyperbolic geometry influenced twentieth-century mathematics. Coxeter’s writing helped Escher develop visual representations of hyperbolic space.
Impossible triangle: A triangular figure whose locally plausible bars cannot form a consistent three-dimensional object. The figure captures the same conflict between local depth cues and global structure found in Escher’s work.
Woodcut: A relief-printing technique in which an image is carved into a block of wood and printed from raised areas. This demanding medium suited Escher’s sharply defined patterns and architectural scenes.
Waterfall (M. C. Escher): A 1961 lithograph depicting a watercourse that appears to drive a perpetual, self-feeding waterfall. Its channel uses impossible perspective to make water seem to climb continuously.
Haarlem School of Architecture and Decorative Arts: A Dutch art and design school where Escher studied graphic arts after beginning architectural studies. His training there established the printmaking skills that shaped his career.
Bruno Ernst: The pen name of Dutch writer Hans de Rijk, known for explaining the mathematical ideas in Escher’s art. Ernst’s discussions connected Escher’s images with mathematical concepts.
Penrose stairs: An impossible staircase that forms a continuous loop while appearing to rise or descend in one direction. This later formal construction resembles the paradoxical staircase in Ascending and Descending.
