M4 carbine

The M4 carbine is a U.S. 5.56×45mm NATO selective-fire firearm derived from the M16 rifle. Its shorter barrel and adjustable stock suit close-quarters use while retaining compatibility with many M16 components.

Direct impingement: A gas-operated firearm system that directs propellant gas through a tube to act on the bolt carrier. The M4 uses this system to cycle its action after firing.
Colt Commando: A compact 5.56mm carbine developed by Colt as part of its CAR-15 family. Its short-barreled design anticipated the compact role later filled by the M4.
Close-quarters combat: Combat conducted at short distances, often in buildings, trenches, or other confined spaces. The M4’s compact dimensions make it easier to handle in confined environments.
M16A4: A U.S. military rifle variant with a fixed stock, longer barrel, and detachable carrying handle or rail system. Compared with the M4, its longer barrel favors velocity and range over compactness.
5.56×45mm NATO: A small-caliber, high-velocity rifle cartridge standardized for NATO forces. This is the M4’s standard ammunition and shapes its range and recoil.
CAR-15: A family of compact AR-15-pattern rifles and carbines developed by Colt in the 1960s. The M4 belongs to the longer lineage of compact Colt designs represented by CAR-15.
United States Army: The land warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces. The Army adopted the M4 and made it a standard infantry weapon.
Heckler & Koch HK416: A 5.56mm rifle family using a short-stroke gas piston operating system and AR-15-style controls. The HK416 offers a different operating system in a role overlapping the M4’s.
M16 rifle: A family of U.S. military rifles chambered for 5.56×45mm NATO ammunition. The M4’s design and operating system descend from the M16 family.
XM4: The experimental carbine designation used during the M4’s U.S. Army development and testing. Trials under this designation led to adoption of the M4.
