Ma Zhiyuan

Ma Zhiyuan was a Chinese poet and playwright of the Yuan dynasty, best known for his zaju dramas and lyric poems, especially the song “Autumn Thoughts.”

Zaju: Zaju is a form of Chinese drama that flourished during the Yuan dynasty, combining spoken dialogue, song, and dance. Ma Zhiyuan’s plays belong to this theatrical form.
Autumn Thoughts: “Autumn Thoughts” is a short sanqu lyric by Ma Zhiyuan, celebrated for its compressed images of autumn and travel. It is his most famous lyric and a canonical example of his poetic style.
Guan Hanqing: Guan Hanqing was a Yuan-dynasty playwright whose zaju plays include The Injustice to Dou E. He is another leading playwright of the theatrical world Ma Zhiyuan shared.
Mongol conquest of the Song dynasty: The Mongol conquest of the Song dynasty culminated in the establishment of Yuan rule over China in the thirteenth century. The change of regime preceded the cultural institutions in which Ma’s career took shape.
