Maarten Tromp

Maarten Tromp (1598–1653) was a Dutch naval officer who commanded the Dutch fleet during the Eighty Years’ War and the First Anglo-Dutch War.

Battle of the Downs: A 1639 naval battle in which a Dutch fleet under Tromp defeated a Spanish fleet sheltering in English waters. Tromp’s victory helped break Spanish naval power in the North Sea.
Michiel de Ruyter: A Dutch admiral who became one of the Republic’s leading naval commanders in the seventeenth century. De Ruyter served under Tromp and later succeeded him as a foremost Dutch admiral.
Eighty Years' War: A war from 1568 to 1648 in which the Dutch provinces fought for independence from Spanish rule. Tromp built his early naval career during this struggle.
