Macedonian Front

The First World War front in the Balkans, where Allied and Central Powers forces fought in Macedonia from 1915 to 1918.

Salonika expedition: The Allied military expedition sent to Salonika in 1915 to support Serbia and establish a Balkan front. It created the Allied foothold from which the front was sustained.
Serbian Campaign of 1915: The Central Powers invasion that overran Serbia in late 1915 and forced its army to retreat through Albania. Serbia’s defeat prompted the Allied deployment to Salonika.
Franchet d'Espèrey: French general who commanded Allied forces on the Macedonian Front from June 1918. He organized the September offensive that broke the Bulgarian lines.
Bulgarian armistice: The September 1918 agreement by which Bulgaria ceased hostilities against the Allies. Its signing opened the route north through the Balkans to the Central Powers.
Battle of Dobro Pole: A September 1918 Allied attack that broke through Bulgarian lines in the Macedonian mountains. Its breakthrough began the collapse of Bulgaria’s position on the front.
Battle of Gallipoli: The 1915–1916 Allied campaign to seize the Dardanelles and Constantinople from the Ottoman Empire. After Gallipoli failed, Allied forces became available for deployment to Salonika.
Maurice Sarrail: French general who commanded Allied forces at Salonika from 1915 to 1917. His tenure shaped the early Allied defense and expansion of the front.
Battle of Skra-di-Legen: A May 1918 Allied victory against Bulgarian forces in the mountains west of the Vardar River. It demonstrated the growing effectiveness of the Allied army before the final offensive.
Armistice of Salonica: The September 1918 armistice that ended Bulgaria’s participation in the First World War. It took the principal Central Powers army on the front out of the war.
Constantinople Agreement: A secret 1915 agreement in which Britain and France promised Russia control of Constantinople and the Turkish Straits. The proposed route through the Straits shaped early Allied plans for aiding Serbia.
