MacGuffin

A plot device that motivates characters’ actions while remaining comparatively unimportant in itself. Its specific identity matters less than the pursuit or conflict it generates.

Plot device: A narrative element used to shape events, motivate action, or produce an effect in a story. A MacGuffin is a specific kind of device that drives the plot through characters’ pursuit.
The 39 Steps: Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 spy thriller about a man pursued after a mysterious woman’s death. Its secret organization, the “39 Steps,” exemplifies a mystery whose details matter less than the chase.
Alfred Hitchcock: English film director known for suspense films including Vertigo, Psycho, and North by Northwest. Hitchcock popularized the MacGuffin as a way to describe an object that drives a plot.
Chekhov's gun: A storytelling principle that an introduced element should become necessary to the plot. Unlike a MacGuffin, a Chekhov’s gun earns its place through later narrative payoff.
Narrative economy: The efficient use of story elements to accomplish multiple narrative purposes with limited material. A MacGuffin can unify character goals and plot movement without requiring extensive explanation.
Inciting incident: An event that disrupts a story’s initial situation and sets its main action in motion. A MacGuffin can enter the story through the event that launches its pursuit.
The Maltese Falcon: John Huston’s 1941 film noir about private detective Sam Spade and the search for a jeweled statuette. The falcon’s shifting value and uncertain authenticity drive the characters’ pursuit.
Angus MacPhail: British screenwriter who collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock on several films. Hitchcock credited MacPhail with helping develop the term MacGuffin.
Red herring: A misleading clue or detail that diverts attention from the truth in a narrative or argument. A red herring misdirects interpretation; a MacGuffin motivates pursuit, whether or not it misleads.
Suspension of disbelief: An audience’s willingness to accept a story’s imagined circumstances while engaging with it. A convincing pursuit can matter more than whether the MacGuffin’s premise withstands scrutiny.
